Top 10 American Christmas Traditions

Posted on October 26th, 2006. About Family.

Every family has different traditions during the holiday season. For some families, one holiday tradition may include an uncle getting dressed up as Santa Claus. In another family, Christmas Eve dinner may top the tradition list. Some traditions are passed on from generation to generation, while others are created as families grow and change. While there is no way to create a comprehensive list of traditions, the following list highlights ten traditions that are representative of American families celebrating Christmas.

Number 10: Caroling. This tradition may not be as popular today as it once was. Perhaps it’s because too many people live in the suburbs, where houses are far away and neighborhoods are not as close knit as they used to be. But singing among family members and classmates still tops the hearts of many folks. Many of us can remember caroling around the nursing home with our friends or bundling up to hit the streets on a cold winter’s evening.

Number 9: Greeting Cards. What American holiday would be complete without greetings cards? The first Christmas card appeared in London in 1843 and became popular in America around 1875. Today many families send Christmas cards to their friends and family across the United States and even around the world. Some busy families include personalized letters reviewing the past year for their loved ones, while other families prefer to send cards featuring a recent family photo.

Number 8: Shopping. Christmas shopping season officially begins the day after Thanksgiving and continues until Christmas day. To some folks, it’s the most enjoyable part of the season. To others, shopping is one big necessary headache. Internet shopping has recently changed the face of holiday shopping forever, and men across world have been cheering! But no matter how popular internet shopping has become, nothing can compare to an old fashioned holiday shopping trip to see the lights, hear the bells, and smell the holiday excitement.

Number 7: Movies. For many families, the month of December becomes one long trip through Christmas movie nostalgia. Not only do the TV channels rebroadcast all of the old favorite Christmas movies, but the true movie-fan family also has DVDs and tapes of all their own favorites. Whether you fancy Rudolph or George Bailey, movies help families gear up their Christmas spirit in the days leading up to the festive day.

Number 6: Party. Christmas parties have become an essential part of the American holiday season, and the office Christmas party is a notoriously good time. The Christmas party can be one of two things. One, the party can be the chance to see old friends and colleagues, and make new ones under the mistletoe. Or the Christmas party can be a chance to create stories for the rest of the office to share over the New Year.

Number 5: Eggnog. This holiday treat is often linked to Number 6, and perhaps is a lot of the problem with Number 6.

Number 4: Cookies. For children and grownups alike, this may be the best Christmas tradition of all. Every holiday season, children of all ages bake up an assortment of their Christmas cookie specialties, while the rest of the family anxiously waits to taste their wonderful creations.

Number 3: Stockings. Each Christmas season, stockings can be found throughout American homes. Stockings may include gag gifts, like coal, or little gifts, like candy, CD’s, and socks. Either way, hanging a stocking from the fireplace mantle is as much of a part of Christmas as Santa Claus and Rudolph.

Number 2: Christmas lights. Speaking of Santa and Rudolph, how else can they find your house on Christmas Eve without a little help from decorations all over your abode? The brilliant colors and cheer of Christmas decorations on a home is enough to warm the heart of even the biggest Grinch. Just be careful not to pull a “Clark Griswold”!

Number 1: Christmas Tree. Besides the manger scene, there is not a better known symbol of Christmas than the Christmas tree. Trees around the United States are fully decked out in lights, ornaments, and a star on top, waiting for Santa to come and fill the underneath with presents for the entire family.

Whether your favorite Christmas tradition made our list or not, the most important thing to remember this holiday season is to make cherished memories with your loved ones. Celebrate deep-rooted traditions and continue to create new holiday traditions to share with your family and friends.

Diwali - The Festival of Lights

Posted on October 22nd, 2006. About Family.

Diwali is celebrated all over India and elsewhere in the world where Indians gather together. Traditionally known by its Sanskrit name Deepavali, it actually means “a row of lights”. Although predominantly a Hindu festival, it is observed by Sikhs and Jains as well. In general, Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, goodness over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The story of its origins varies, depending on where you happen to be.

In northern India, the story goes that King Rama fought a lengthy war against Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. The festival is in honour of his victory, his homecoming with his wife, Sita, to Ayodhya and his coronation. In Gujarat, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is the focus and in Bengal, the festival honours the goddess Kali, to some a violent creature and to others, the mother goddess.

No matter what the regional differences, Diwali means rebirth and people often wear new clothes to signify this, they also thoroughly clean their houses and in India, decorate their courtyards with patterns, known as “rangoli” created with powdered or diluted paint. To add to the festive air, doorways are draped with garlands of mango leaves and marigolds, known as “torans” It also means that winter is coming and seeds must be sown to ensure food supplies for the following year.

The actual date of Diwali varies according to the Hindu calendar but generally falls towards the end of October/beginning of November. The festival itself lasts for five days, each of which has designated rituals of worship to various gods and goddesses but it is the third day which includes the fun of processions and fireworks.

It is a time to exchange gifts with family and friends, somewhat like the Christian festival of Christmas. Traditionally, houses are cleaned thoroughly then decorated with oil lamps called diyas and candles and streets are strung with fairy lights. The ground outside homes and temples is decorated with Rangoli patterns, often made with coloured rice and flour and water to attract the attention of the Goddess Lakshmi. Sweets and fire crackers are bought and food and clothes given to the poor.

It is the custom to give sweets, dried fruits or flowers as Diwali gifts when visiting, neighbours and relatives but in these modern times, the gifts are often rather more valuable such as jewellery, silk, leather or silver goods. For close family, even electronic goods such as a camera or television might be seen as appropriate.

There are a number of traditional sweet and savoury foods for Diwali. The recipes for these vary from family to family but will remain the same year after year.

Legend has it that Lord Shiva and his wife, the Goddess Parvati played dice on Diwali day and she decreed that gambling on Diwali night would ensure prosperity throughout the coming year. The influence of the goddess Lakshmi is considered to bring luck to gamblers and these days people play betting card games, in the hopes of being favoured by the goddess of wealth.

Ipod Video Sales

Posted on October 20th, 2006. About Family.

The sales of the new iPod video are surprisingly good, taking into account the fact that no research has been made for the customer market and their needs or requirements.

A possible disadvantage for the sales may be the fact that the negative advertising has been made. This negative advertising concerns the vulnerability of the screens, the easy scratching surfaces and other several features. However, the sales are up due to the great success among the teenagers, among very busy people who travel a lot.

Some researches show that for the Amazon online store the most popular iPod is the Nano model. However, the sales are ahead expectations and in the case of other stores are outselling the popular iPod Nano. These high sales may be due to the high storage capacity, video features and reasonable prices. From this point of view, a selection of users may be made, as the Nano edition iPod attracts more MP3 users. Therefore, a new trend and a new profile of user appeared taking into account the high sales for the new video iPod. This will surely point towards Apple designing particular models for different users.

Another aspect of the great sales concerns the fact the new iPod video is not a competitor for the TV industry, but more a complementary device. Although the rating of some TV shows or films may lower, the iPod video may also contribute to the fame extend of some TV shows or films. The sales may be also triggered by the trendy urban lifestyle and capacity of influencing the preferences and needs of the others. The fact that the episodes of the TV series such is the case of “Lost” or “Desperate Housewives” may have contributed to the great success and great sales of the new edition of the iPod.

Other sales were going up as they developed from the new edition of the iPod and this is the case of the iTunes Music Store. In this type of store you may buy episodes of the famous TV series, music videos and pictures. The parallel development of two complementary services - the handheld video device and the special store for it - is a great achievement. Besides, the iPod is the best selling music online store and it will probably be the best music video online store. The sales may also rise due to the new available TV series or TV shows of the famous TV Channels.

Taking into account the fact that the iPod is the best seller in the United States, being the most successful music player, it was easy to predict high sales for the new edition, even it is a video iPod. The prices were lower as the lower-cost players were introduced on the market in the last years, but the Nano edition has increased the prices. With the new iPod video the price has been pushed beyond the average selling price.

That is why the sales of 100 iPods every minute may seem not surprising at all and sales of 14 millions in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2006 are considered not bad at all for such a company. The sales for the iPod video may also rise together with the spreading worldwide of the popularity of this edition of iPod.

However, the iPod video doubles the Apple’s sales. The sales were made skyrocket due to the great success of the new iPod video outselling in some cases other types or editions of iPods. Nevertheless, the maximized sales are due to the new video features, longer battery life, more options and more memory space enough for a lot of music, music videos, TV shows and episodes, and even lots of photos for the photo album. These features and improvements make the new iPod video so popular and fashionable. These aspects and others (games, possibility of checking the e-mail, possibility of finding out the time in other cities and other useful features) suit very well the contemporary lifestyle.

What’s the Deal with Black Cats?

Posted on October 18th, 2006. About Family.

Halloween is the time of year when your child is inundated with visions of ghosts and goblins, witches and monsters. It’s easy to understand how all these creatures have have earned their scary reputations-they represent unkown forces with “evil” intent, or at least the intent to scare little children every October.

Last week, Lynn, a mother of three young children, was walking with her youngest, when a neighbor’s black cat wandered up, looking for some friendly attention. Lynn’s little boy screamed in fear, demanding that his mom rush him home, before the “bad” cat got him. They have three cats at home, incidentally, but none of them are black. Apparently, though, he’d seen enough images of black cats, cavorting with all the other Halloween spooks, that he was certain something bad was about to happen.

We humans have always viewed cats as mysterious creatures-they’re domesticated, like dogs, but independent and often aloof, frequently preferring to be alone, requiring only sporadic affection. Still, it’s easy to see how witches and ghosts became continuing characters in our spooky traditions, but how did the black cat win its icon status in the Scary Hall of Fame? It’s actually a status that seems to be peculiar to America.

In ancient times, as in many parts of the world today, the black cat reperesented a harbinger of good fortune, rather than danger. In ancient Egypt, well-to-do households held their pet black cats in high regard, granting them a place of honor in the home, in order to guarantee riches and prosperity.

Legend holds that, in the 17th century, King Charles I of England had a black cat which he believed was his good luck charm, and kept a round-the-clock guard on the prized pet. When the cat died (presumably of old age), the King lamented publicly that his luck was at an end. The very next day the king was arrested and charged with high treason, and was eventually executed.

In the past, in certain English fishing villages, the luck of the black cat-believed to bring fisherman safely home from the sea-was such an important tradition that fishermen’s wives paid a huge price to obtain such a pet.

Even today, in many parts of the world, a black cat crossing one’s path is considered good luck, the exact opposite of the American superstition.

Historians believe that the Pilgrims are responsible for the black cat’s evil reputation in American today. When they emigrated to these shores for religious reasons, the Pilgrims brought with them a deep distrust of any superstition, believing such traditions were evil and dark.

Since the Middle Ages, many in England believed that those who practiced witchcraft used black cats as “familiars”, or creatures who could commune with evil spirits, in order to carry out the witches’ spells. Such was the fear of black cats that, for many years, in America, it was believed among certain religious sects that the only way to stop an evil spell was to shoot a black cat with a silver bullet.

Even today, most pet centers and animal shelters refuse to sell black cats around Halloween, for fear that they may be harmed or killed.

The next time a beautiful black cat crosses your-or your child’s-path, wanting a little affection, try talking to it. If it rubs against your leg and purrs in approval, you be the judge of its intent. It has no idea that it’s an object of fear-just like your tabby at home, it just wants a little love.

13 Ways To Help Your Child Make The Best Of Himself, Or Herself

Posted on October 16th, 2006. About Family.

There are ways we, as parents, can help our child grow and develop to become the a great person. We all want that for our child, but do we do all we can to help them do that?
Here are a few great ways to help you child grow:

Love - love you child unconditionally. Weather he dose his homework or not, cleans his room or not. Your love should be way beyond these things. Your child will notice that.

Tell them you love them - Just tell them “I love you”, a few times a day. If you find that difficult, you only need it more.

Believe - have faith in your child’s abilities and potential. Tell him that you do believe in him and his ability. There is no better way to grow a potent adult than believing in him totally.

Set an example - This way your child can learn about the right and wrong straight from your behavior. Always remember that a child will learn weather you set a good or a dab example.

Commend your child every time he acts in a way you find to be a good way. Commending him insures he will act that way the nest time, too.

Tell them what you see as good features - if you think that generosity is a good feature to have, tell that to your child, and commend them each time they act in a generous way.

Remember that each child is different - let every child develop in his unique way and remember that an approach that is good for one child is not suitable for the other one.

Stay positive - Tell your child what’s good, not what’s bad. For example, tell them that “being polite will bring you better results in life” instead of telling them that : “being rude will get you no where in life”

Take a few seconds before you say something to your child. - especially when they did something wrong, pay closer attention to what you’re saying to your child. What’s the smartest thing you can tell him right now?

Tell you child a story that has a positive message for life. I still remember the stories I was told when I was a child and the effect they had on me!

Try to establish a peaceful environment in your home - this will have a lasting effect on the kind of person your child will grow to be.

Look at other parents and learn - take the good things and think how you can implement them with your child. Take the bad things and beware not to do that to your child.

Ask yourself each day - how can I be a better parent?

Being a better parent is not always easy but it have a lasting effect on how your child will grow and develop. Most parents just go with the flow. Don’t be like that. Make an effort to being a better parent. The rewards are priceless.
